Old Mini Monday 23 – Fantasy 13

Background

While visiting my brother, he rounded up all his old painted minis and let me borrow the box of them to share on the blog.

Characters/Minis

The one on the left, reminds me of that famous fantasy hero “Conan”. Which reminds me that I’ve been playing too much single player Conan Exiles as of late. The other two I wasn’t able to track down. Though they are possibly two of my favorite minis from my brother’s collection. The one in the middle looks like a pretty good villain, especially with the red and blue/black colors that my brother painted them in. The mini on the far right, I was really hoping to track down the name, as it’s pretty different looking from most of the fantasy minis I’ve seen. The armor, mask, and even the sword, look a bit exotic. With the colors my brother used, I feel like it’s an armored up Aztec warrior.

[EDIT: Tracked down the one on the far right, special thanks to Mark Morin for pointing out the Ral Partha Chaos Wars Kickstarter. I still can’t find the mini on the Lost Minis Wiki, but at least I can confirm that it is Ral Partha’s and sculpted by Tom Meier.]

Tangent –
Favorite Color

Yep, that’s this week’s tangent. Partly because I’ve been under the weather, and partly because that thought was drifting through my head as I looked at my pile of paints last.

“What’s your favorite color? Either a color you tend to paint with predominantly or maybe one that you keep stockpiling in your collection.”

I don’t think I have a favorite color to paint with, as the last few minis have started by looking at guides. In the past, the bulk of my painting was taken up with painting Blood Bowl teams. Which meant mainly choosing some color combos to make each team stand out from one another.

Last I looked, I think I have a rather large stockpile of blues/greys. Nowadays I tend to buy my paints online, as I need them. I used to get them from a game or hobby store before. Which typically meant I was bringing home more paints than I needed. I would browse through the paint stock at the store, and while looking for what I needed, would inevitably run into a color that caught my eye and pick it up. “Oh, a shiny metal, bright pink/purple. Ah, a nice blue/grey…”. I would guess a number of those have never even been cracked open. The dangers of going into a store without sticking to your plan!

  1. Most used colour would be Burnt Umber from the the Winsor and Newton Winton range of oils. I use it a lot for faces, clothes, fur and most often in ground work. Favourite colour is blue but the colour I have the most of is red. As a primary colour it’s fine to darken but so difficult to lighten unless you want pink. Nice figures by the way too.

    1. Thanks TIM! Interesting that you have mainly red, but your favorite color is blue. I’m pretty sure I have more browns/tans now, than when I was keeping track of all my paints in a spreadsheet (which is what I referenced when writing this up). The Paint Pot app (for iOS) I use for inventory is nice, but I don’t think it tallies up colors as easily as I could in a spreadsheet.

  2. Out of curiosity have you or your brother considered stripping any of these models and repainting them? (Of course I advise you to resist the urge to stop reading that last sentence after the first ten words…). Not to do down the way they’re painted already but your skills are really good now and you could undoubtedly give some of these classic models the paintjob they deserve.

As for my favourite colour I’m not sure I have one but my favourite paint must be Agrax Earthshade, I really don’t think I could paint a miniature now without it.

    1. Haha, @ stripping and Agrax. Not necessarily combined!

As for stripping the minis, they are my brothers. He’s fine with them the way they are, and doesn’t really game anyways. I’ve been tempted to pick some up for my own collection, but…I have a lot to paint already and my goal is really to have stuff to game with. If I was playing some sort of D&D game on a regular basis, I’d probably consider it. Never say never though!

      1. Heh, so this comment stuck in my head a bit last night “Not to do down the way they’re painted already but your skills are really good now and you could undoubtedly give some of these classic models the paintjob they deserve.”.

I’ve actually been wondering a bit about this lately. Modern minis can be a pain to assemble, but in many ways are so much easier to paint with their surface details. I think it takes a really skilled/imaginative painter to really make those old minis shine. I’m not sure that I have that talent though. You have to be able to create stuff that isn’t there. Like strands of hair, or worse, pieces of armor and clothing. I struggled with that, back in the day, and I don’t think I’m any better at it now. It’s like making convincing freehand, and my skills just aren’t there. Thanks indeed for the compliment, but I think in some ways what I do now is different than what these would require. It’s a challenge I should try out at some point though. I still have dreams of picking up some minis from Other World Miniatures, as those are just beautiful.

  3. My mind went straight to Conan on that first one, too. Is the sword on the dude in the middle supposed to be like that, or did it just get banged around at some point? His pose and varied colour scheme makes me think he’d go well with Tears of Envy’s Disco Chaos Sorcerer: http://tearsofenvysblog.blogspot.com/2018/09/need-hobby-try-disco-chaos-magic.html

If I had to pick one favourite colour, it would be purple, but I have a general tendency toward cooler tones (greens/blues/purples) and neutral tones (greys, some browns, darker metallics). There have been a couple of times when I’ve specifically picked a colour scheme to try to break myself out of that, because I always tend to default back there.

    1. Yea, that sword definitely got twisted up. I resisted the temptation to straighten anything, as good chance of breaking the damned things on those old minis.

Yea, I guess I tend to favor certain color schemes too. Bright reds, yellows, and oranges aren’t things I would normally reach for. But if I see a color scheme used successfully, then I’m willing to give it a try.

  4. I have over 250 paints and they are all dear to me. But I don’t always remember all of them as I do not have a mimetic memory! I have a spreadsheet that I use so I don’t buy extras I don’t need, and I track all the ones that I’ve used up.

        1. Damn, and still useable? The original citadel paints I have from a ways back (think they were already used when I got them), all dried up on me. I tried to resuscitate them, but no dice.

  5. I bloody love Conan and it’s only been in recent years that I’ve noticed the Lama shagging scene haha!! My all time favourite colour is black and yeeeessss relaaaaaxxx I know it’s a shade and not s colour. The amount of times that some anus has told me that haha. As far as favourites as far as paints I like Steel Legion, all the bone colours, lead belcher, pallid witch flesh (I think that’s what it’s called) Khorne Red and Agrax wash. All from GW.

  6. My favourite colour to paint is definitely pink. It’s so good as a spot colour to liven up an otherwise unduly realistic paint scheme. It stands out well on the table top at 3 feet range (no-one has a bright pink gaming board!). And, at least locally, no-one else ever seems to use it so it’s really easy to identify my forces.

    1. Pink Argent Badger, it is, haha! That reminds me that the guy who runs our board game group always picks green. Mainly because he teaches so many games, it’s easier for him to have a constant. So picking pink all the time, works in the same way. I might have some pics of my old pink Skaven Blood Bowl team somewhere. Will have to share that if I find it.

  7. I sometimes buy extras of commonly used paints, and sometimes buy extras by accident. I’m ok with that, though. I just wish there was a way I could have them ALL out (sans dupes) so I could really choose from the full range of however many I have, but it’s not likely to happen anytime soon. As for favourite paints, there’s the Citadel Reds (Khorne, Mephiston and Evil Sunz Scarlet), the old triad of Citadel browns (now via Vallejo and a touch of Citadel – Scorched, Bestial and Snakebite Leather/XV-88) and my triad of Vallejo “bone” shades – Bonewhite, Elfic Flesh and whatever the other one is called. Offwhite? – though Iraqui Sand and Pale sand have broken into that top tier.
For washes, AP Dark, Soft and Strong Tone.
Also, Lahmian Medium. I’ve tried others, and none come close.

    1. Yea, I hear ya about having all the paints out. Even with the space I have, just isn’t much of a way to do that. I mainly just go digging when I need a ‘brown’ or I want to add in a color I haven’t used.
