Where’s Faust?!

Where’s Faust?!

Got a couple questions asking how I’m doing and where I’m at, mainly because I haven’t updated the blog in quite some time and haven’t been as active in commenting on blogs as in the past.

Short answer:  I’m doing fine, but things other than miniature painting have been consuming my time. I’m not sure when I will get back to miniature painting, but I would most likely post here when I do.

Longer answer: I’m doing okay. Work has been busy, life has been busy, I’m dealing with a week long cold bug that has been kicking my butt. Nothing new, these things happen.

My passion (or tolerance) for miniature painting has pretty much plummeted though. It’s a lot of work for me on a good day, and when energy levels are low, it’s not an easy thing to gravitate to. In addition to this, my taste for Games Workshop (GW) has bottomed out. Yes, those are fighting words in some parts…so hear me out a moment. GW still makes some of the most detailed minis around and as a company they seem better than what things were like in the past. I’m not here to say “Don’t buy GW products, they suck!!”. I’ve just never been in love with their products like some. To that extent, seeing their minis over and over, just seems sort of boring to me. Despite some really talented painters out there (most of the people I follow!) who keep making them look good. That’s always been a bit of an issue for me, but probably the tipping point….was after spending a considerable amount of time and effort painting Necromunda gangs, and then finding the game just not what I wanted it to be. Probably some inner demon within me that thinks “If I put all the time in prepping, researching, basing, painting, etc., then you better give me the damned game of my dreams!”. Well, that didn’t happen. There are people who certainly like or love the game, the way it is. That’s fine, I’m glad that they are happy with it. But overall it has been a turnoff to playing that game, and I think I’ve stated early on that I enjoy gaming more than painting overall.

Yes, there are a lot of counter-arguments to all of that. Paint minis by other manufacturers, don’t put so much time into painting minis, do your research on the game before spending so much time on it (I thought I had), etc.

Which does remind me of a bit of wisdom that I will share with anyone wanting to get into this hobby…paint whatever interests you first, don’t save those things for last. Seems obvious, right? Apparently not for me, it isn’t. I started on the things I wasn’t as fond of, thinking I would build up my skills and then my favorite pieces would look the best. The thing is, new minis are coming out everyday, and your favorite pieces won’t always be your favorites for years. Painting minis takes time, and as much as we would like to think it, we don’t have all the time in the world.

Ok, so we’ve hopefully established that I’m seriously burned out on painting minis for the time being. And maybe a few people are wondering what do I do, if I’m not spending tons of time painting minis? Work, family, computer games, watching movies/tv, boardgames, and graphic novels. All those sorts of things. The other thing that I finally decided to try once again, is to build my own arcade machine. This is the one project that has likely supplanted miniature painting for the time being. Building an arcade machine does allow me to involve the family more in my hobby time though. The teen and I have been working with tools, with me showing him how to saw boards, etc. The little one has helped with assembling buttons. I try to involve them as much as possible in the different steps along the way. So hopefully by the end of Summer, we will have something we all had a part in. Miniature painting I find a lot more difficult to share, though that might change depending on the little one’s interest as she gets older. She already has strong inclinations towards art/painting. Maybe from seeing all of Daddy’s paints and minis.

Oh yea, blogging…since I’m not painting minis, I haven’t had anything to really show or share. The ‘bored with GW minis’ has made it hard to get through blog reads. But mainly work/life has kept me way too busy to keep up.

So finally, “Will I ever paint/blog again?”. Well, I haven’t sold any of my paints or minis off. (though I have been tempted to sell off Necromunda minis, grumble grumble)

That to me is a good sign. I still like Blood Bowl, but that game is really tough to get played. Blitz Bowl is quite a bit easier to get played, but doesn’t totally scratch the Blood Bowl itch for me. Either way, it means I will likely keep those minis and a good chance that the “Blood Bowl fever” will resurface again and get me to want to paint the minis once more. I’ve fancied painting some of the D&D board game pieces or painting other random minis, just because I like them. So yea, there could come a day where I post some painted minis once again.

As for blogging, I don’t really want to turn this blog into something other than a gaming/painting blog. It wouldn’t feel right to me. If I really felt the need to blog about building an arcade machine or whatever project I’m working on, then I think I’d be starting up another blog instead.

So yep, that’s where things are at. Still appreciate all the help and kindness people have directed my way. The miniature painting community is a truly amazing group. Hopefully I’ll be back amongst you all at a later date.

  1. Faust, great to hear from you! Hope you’re all OK! Building an arcade machine with the family sounds like a pretty good thing to be doing with your time to me! Since I don’t paint any GW stuff, you can keep following my blog and not feel bad about it at all! Having said that, because I don’t paint GW stuff, I really enjoy seeing all of the GW minis posted on the various blogs I follow! Take care mate! 🙂

    1. Ok, just your blog John, haha! Thanks man. Yea, not sure I would end up blogging about the arcade thing, but it will be a fun project once we make some good headway on it.

  2. Glad to hear you’re doing alright man, was a bit worried when you went quiet, you’re usually such a verbose fellow! I know we wouldn’t know each other from a hole in the road but I was worried something bad had happened to you. Nothing wrong with a little hobby burnout, there’s a lot more to life than miniatures! Good luck with the arcade machine, sounds like a really interesting project. I know you said you don’t plan on posting about it here but I for one would be interested to see it when it’s done.

  3. Burnout seems to be sort of going around these days. Nothing wrong with that. Glad to hear you’re doing alright and still have some cool stuff going on, and I hope you and yours have a good one!

    1. Thanks Alexis! Yea, there are so many factors that can go into burnout. I also think my hobbies have been cyclical in nature over the years. I used to collect comics like crazy. Then got rid of them, then bought a whole bunch of them again. Then got rid of those. Rinse, repeat. But mini painting, gaming, etc. are all things that I seem to come back to over time. So I’m sure this is not “the end”.

  4. Good to hear from you and glad that things are ok. Hobby slumps come and go, I think that’s just the way it is. Do share at least a few pics of the arcade cabinet, sounds like an awesome project!

  5. Can totally relate to this as I am in a very similar position, but for me it was primarily due to oversaturation on social media. I cut almost everything away, reduced my blogging to a minimum (approx 1 post a month) and this has opened up time for gaming, comics, TV series and books that has been neglected as this hobby and especially when you add in the social media can get a bit all consuming.

Hope you enjoy the downtime, and if I can reccomend something is that Underworlds is slowly creeping up my fav list. Excellent warbands, quick set up and gameplay (as long as your cards are prepped). Mind I love a good BB league but when you can play 3 games of underworlds in the time it takes to play one quick (!) game of BB that is quite telling in a busy RL situation.

    1. Thanks man! Have you checked out Blitz Bowl? I could play about 4 games of that to 1 game of Blood Bowl!

Underworld is intriguing, but I’m not much of a wargamer. Probably part of the reason Necromunda fell flat for me.

If I could play anything right now, it would probably be something along the lines of Advanced Heroquest. I keep thinking I really should buy a decent copy of that game someday, before you just can’t find any at all.

      1. Not tried blitz bowl. Is there a player developement there to with SPPs?

Underworld is easier to get into and can be very casual actually. Depends on who you game against but this could easily be played by young teens for example but has good enough minis to keep the more hobby oriented like us interested still.

I agree. That was my gateway into this hobby back in the late 80s. I have a complete set looking at me, especially after seeing krautscientists’ recent blog series on it 😅

        1. Yea, I’m really crushing on Kraut’s stuff. Beautiful work.

Heroquest, AHQ, and Warhammer Quest were my intro to GW. Then to Blood Bowl eventually. That’s really as far as I got though, the rest of GW’s stuff has just never appealed to me. Necromunda’s concept really intrigued me, but it appears to be mainly about setting up skirmish sessions.

No development in Blitz Bowl, just standalone games. Though I imagine there are a lot of house rules out there for advancement. I’ve been tempted to give that a go myself. Just not sure if it would ‘feel right’ though.

Oh yea, congrats on reigning in the social media flood! Meant to say that last time, but the little one wanted to be fed before I hit send! ;P

  6. Hey man we’ve missed you. You kinda burst into the blogosphere and then burst off again haha. I recently took stock and much like Bigbossredskullz felt I was overdoing it with social media. So I’ve stepped away from YouTube and Instagram to concentrate more on the blog. Ironically I have started a new podcast with my mate though which is non-hobby related haha. Like anything the hobby can be too much at times so it’s good to step away and reassess. I honestly hope you stick with it in some capacity though because it’s be a shame to lose you man. Stay cool. 👍🏼

    1. Thanks IRO! Social media can be a drag for sure. I’ve found Reddit more my cup of tea lately. I’m following some channels related to my job and things I want to learn. And a couple hobby Reddit’s. I really don’t post much, more of a consumer, but that’s ok right now.

I still think blogging is one of the best platforms for miniature painting. Whenever I need a lot of detail on how someone pulled something off, blogs is usually where it’s at. Plus you can’t beat this community! So when I get back to it, this is where I will be.

  7. I did think I hadn’t heard from you for a while. Building an arcade game sounds really cool. I seem to have elf burnout, will paint anything else except them 😱.I loved Mordheim, played the old Necromunda, but really can’t be bothered with the new one. I tried 40k but got bored pretty quickly, but did like Space hulk for a while. Funnily enough though I love Starship Troopers and Aliens and bought miniatures etc.. it’s a weird old world, or maybe it is just me!

    1. Nah, I don’t think it’s just you. We all seem to have our tastes which tend to tie into something nostalgic. I also don’t think you’re the only one who has ever had “Elf burnout”. There happened to be an rpg game awhile ago called Talislanta and it’s slogan was “No Elves!”.

  8. Glad just normal life has kept you distracted. Though if I just had the GW world to paint, the world would be small indeed. Of course, I don’t paint GW stuff as I have a lead mountain of older stuff and more tanks to keep me occupied. And those are things that I’m passionate about, which is the point. Right now the arcade machine (and the family time that project creates) is the passion for you. That’s how it should be. It’s a hobby, and why spend spare time on anything mundane to you? As you rightly state, time is not infinite.

    1. Thanks Mark, glad you’re painting stuff that you’re passionate about! It certainly shows!

There are lots of tricks to make painting more fun. I can’t say I’ve learned any to make prep more fun, and I’m thinking that might be one of the big issues I have with the newer GW minis. At any rate, I imagine I will get back to the painting part at some point. It just seems like it will be a good long while right now, but who knows.

  9. Glad you’re ok. I’ve been trying to get my group into advanced Heroquest for a while as I still have my original copy but the interest isn’t there at present unfortunately. I’ve not given up as I still love the retro vibe of it.

    1. My brother and I were just chatting about the popularity of that game. Outside of us, we never actually saw anyone play it. Though prices appear to be pretty high on Ebay, so there must be some demand.
