Here’s a mercenary for Stargrave. Another 28mm plastic mini from Osprey/Northstar.
The mini was painted with almost all Reaper paints.
He’s one who had sat in the tray until I could come up with a decent color scheme. It took me awhile to figure out what color to paint the skin and one day I just thought “pink!”. Well, the pink didn’t turn out as pink as I thought it would, but it looks okay. I think that actually might be AK paints for the pink/flesh.
I liked the looks of the mini overall, as he will be a decent mini that could be used in all kinds of SciFi games.
Paints wise, things went pretty well once I figured out the colors. The highlights might appear more stark here than they do in person. But it was probably one of the moments where I finally learned how to really start pushing the highlights in the Reaper paints. Which has changed my work quite a bit.
He might not be perfect, but I was pretty happy with him.
Next Up: Stars Again …
Excellent looking Cyclops, I think the skintone works really well, as it’s alien it could be any colour, and like the red undertone to it, could be the planet it comes from has a strong sun hence the darker colours to protect the alien.

Cheers Dave. I kinda forgot that he is a “Cyclops”, as I tend to always equate them with the giant version. Yep, the alien minis in the Stargrave book have quite a few colors too. I’m still not sure if I want to keep each ‘race’ its own color or give them more variety. On the one hand, keeping them the same color base helps with identification but also makes them all start to look the same. Maybe I’ll mix and some races will have more varied colors but others will be more or less the same color base. They also started releasing the female crew minis, so that gives me more to ponder on skin color choices!

I do like to see a lot of variation in skin colours, Star Wars has been doing a lot of that in recent years, so that Rodians are now not just green, but blue, orange yellow, it adds a rich diversity in my opinion.

I kind of like it when they mimic nature where different genders have different color schemes. Like usual, I’ll be putting quite a bit of thought into this before I really get started! Maybe I’ll give The Mandalorian a rewatch while I’m at it to see what catches my eye too.

Very nice! 🙂 Colours and contrast between shade/base/highlights work for me! Pink flesh looks good!

Cheers John! I think I need to work on getting a proper pink scheme going from the new paints, but I’ll get there eventually!

That’s a nice paint scheme on you cyclops! I just started StarGrave myself I am working on a all female crew right now I am very happy with the Osprey/ Northstar plastic kits there so easy to build lots of options on the sprue and they are fun to paint! 😀

Cheers V and welcome to the blog! I haven’t started the female crew yet, but looking forward to it. I’m also looking forward to playing Stargrave someday, haha! Frostgrave has been really fun, but I tend to love SciFi more than Fantasy. Hopefully near end of this year I’ll have enough minis and a good read through the rules to get going.

I never played Mordheim, but heard good things about it. FrostrGrave is probably more my alley though. Blogging takes some work, but I find it can be pretty rewarding! 🙂

I like the bright color scheme you chose here. I think that is one of the advantages of Sci-Fi and so we might as well use it! I think this guy looks like he could be in Guardians of the Galaxy as a result and that is a very good thing 🙂

Thanks K! Yea, he probably would fit in Guardians too. The Reaper paints can be really bright sometimes, which is pretty cool. I also am skipping most washes that I would put on GW models, so that has an effect too.

I really like the pink and how it turned out

Cheers IRO! I think the pink needs a bit more work and I’m not sure why it isn’t very smooth. Might be my fault, but I’ll probably be testing out different pinks before I paint them next time.

Oh I love this chap, both the model and your painting! I think again you’ve done a great job with the colours, the green and blues look great, but the skin is just superb! I know you went for pink, but the deep red works better and his single eye pops against it. Nice!

And there I was expecting a Space Pirate with an eyepatch and you give us a cycopean dude! He looks pretty damn good, actually and the skin tone works very nicely as well.

Cheers buddy! I’m glad he isn’t wearing an eyepatch, his aiming would be worse than Matt’s Muppets!
